“Era of the Witness”

In this talk, Annette Wieviorka will draw upon her work The Era of the Witness as well as the recently published memoir by Salomon Buch, Un serment à la vie (2025) to discuss how testimony and literature serve as significant cultural forms of memory and truth. Complimentary copies of the French-language memoir Un serment à la vie will be provided by the Azrieli Foundation Holocaust Survivor Memoirs program.

Annette Wieviorka is a historian and honorary director of research of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris France. She has published numerous books on the history and memory of the Holocaust. Her 2006 book The Era of the Witness explores of the emergence of survivor testimony into the public sphere. Originally published in French in 1998, it examines the conditions under which testimony, and the social figure of the witness, emerged from the shadows of the Holocaust to become a significant force in contemporary culture. Her recent works include Tombeaux, autobiographie de ma famille  (2022) which received le Prix Femina, and Itinérances (2025).
