“Julius Margolin: A Jewish Destiny

Julius Margolin's itinerary is both typical and exceptional. Typical because of the complex identity of this citizen of the Russian Empire; because he lived through the major events of the 20th century: the Russian Revolution, two world wars, and Stalinism. Also typical in his choice of Zionism. Typical in terms of the treatment reserved for Jewish refugees from Poland in USSR during the WWII: five years in a camp and then exile. Exceptional because he escaped the Holocaust and, after his return to Palestine, wrote a masterful account, the first of its kind in terms of scope and literary value in the Russian language.

My lecture will focus on the construction of Jewish identity through this destiny.

Luba Jurgenson is full Professor at Sorbonne-Université, vice-president of Memorial-France. Her last book publications include: On ne sait pas comment cela finira. Conversation sur l’Ukraine (with Leonid Girshovich), Quand nous nous sommes réveillés. Nuit du 24 février 2022 : invasion de l’Ukraine (2023).
