The Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies is thrilled to announce a very special miracle of this season: the Larry and Judy Tanenbaum Family Foundation has made a remarkable $1.5 million gift to establish the Sam and Alice Lieberman Professorship in Hebrew Studies. With matching funds from the Faculty of Arts and Science, this endowed professorship will have a profound and enduring impact on students, faculty, and the wider community—strengthening Hebrew language, literature, and cultural studies at the University of Toronto for generations to come.

ATCJS Director Professor Anna Shternshis spoke to the significance of this moment:

“The gift builds on an extremely strong and vibrant program that has been developed here over the past decade by our current Hebrew professor, Yigal Nizri… [and] will guarantee that the study of Hebrew language, literature, and culture will always be a fundamental pillar of Jewish Studies and Humanities at the University of Toronto and will benefit generations of students and scholars.”

The Faculty of Arts and Science feature goes on to highlight how the new professorship solidifies U of T’s position as a global leader in the field.
