Jewish Transgender Lives in Weimar Berlin: From B'nai B'rith to the Institute for Sexual Science

Prior to the Nazi dictatorship, Berlin was the world's most open city for transgender people, home to the world's first movement for transgender rights. Transgender and intersex Jews played leading roles in this movement. This talk examines the very different trans and intersex Berlin worlds of Charlotte Charlaque and Karl M. Baer, as well as their fates after Hitler came to power.

Co-sponsored by the Chancellor Rose and Ray Wolfe Chair of Holocaust Studies.

Laurie Marhoefer is Professor of History at the University of Washington, Seattle, formerly Jon Bridgman endowed professor of history (a rotating position). He is a leading expert on transgender and gay politics in Germany during the Weimar Republic and Nazi State.
