“The More Human Letters: The Rise of Talmud and the Limits of midrash

Date: Monday, February 1 at 4:00pm

Description: This talk will trace the rise, in the third and fourth centuries C.E., of the type of scholarship that we call "talmud" through an examination of the earliest document bearing that name, the Talmud Yerushalmi (Palestinian Talmud); it will center on what distinguishes talmud, as an intellectual project, from what has preceded it in Jewish intellectual history, particularly midrash or the interpretation of Scripture.
