New Book Publication by Jill Caskey, Adam S. Cohen and Linda Safran

The ATCJS is excited to share the news of a book publication by Jill Caskey, Adam S. Cohen and Linda Safran. Adam S. Cohen is a professor in Art History at the University of Toronto and an affiliated member of the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies. The book, Art and Architecture of the Middle Ages: Exploring a Connected World will be available through Cornell University Press.

The authors expertly guide readers through twelve centuries of art and architecture created by peoples of diverse backgrounds and religions in western Eurasia and North Africa. This textbook aims to dismantle the religious, political, and geographical walls that have separated medieval art and architecture into distinct categories. Islamic, Byzantine, and western European art and architecture are no longer treated as separate entities; they are not interwoven in a single framework.

Along with the publication of the textbook, the authors have also launched a companion website, which features galleries of medieval objects, buildings, and cities. Each work is discussed and catalogued in a way that supports classroom research and fosters interest in the field. Pedagogical features can also be found on the website, including maps, timelines, glossary, and translated primary sources.

In celebration, a book launch co-sponsored by the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies, Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies, and the Department of Art History was held on December 15, 2022. The launch party was well attended by the colleagues and friends of the authors.
