November 22, 2021 by Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies

We are deeply saddened to share the news of Professor Carol Zemel's death on Sunday, November 21st, 2021. Professor Zemel was a beloved member of our community for many years and held the Gerstein Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies in 2016. During her time at the ATCJS, Prof. Zemel left a lasting impact on all who were lucky enough to be her students, colleagues, and friends. She wrote about her experience at the Centre here. Prof. Zemel's invaluable scholarly contributions to the fields of Art History, Visual Studies, and Jewish Studies, along with her indominable spirit will be remembered and celebrated for many years to come. The Israel and Golda Koschitzky Centre for Jewish Studies at York University, Prof. Zemel's home department, have posted a memorial piece that you can read here. Her loss leaves a significant void, and she will be dearly missed.
